Forward Deployed Engineer, Legal [Office of the CTO]

About the role

This position places a founding engineer within the Legal department to bridge the gap between legal operations and the Office of the CTO. You will identify automation potential and build AI-driven solutions to modernize how the company handles complex regulatory and corporate tasks.

What you'll do

• Partner with Legal leadership to analyze and automate workflows such as contract reviews, regulatory filings, and subsidiary governance.
• Build and prototype tools using the existing Coinbase AI platform.
• Manage the Legal automation roadmap by translating technical constraints and requirements between engineering teams and legal stakeholders.
• Determine the build-versus-buy strategy for all legal tooling.
• Design systems that prioritize auditability, privilege boundaries, and human-in-the-loop controls for all automated outputs.
• Lead training sessions and feedback loops to ensure high adoption rates among legal staff.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, specifically in ambiguous environments with heavy stakeholder involvement.
• Experience deploying LLM-based applications, including work with hallucination guardrails, evaluation frameworks, and prompt engineering.
• Ability to act as a translator between non-technical domain experts and engineering teams.
• Background in Forward Deployed Engineering, Solutions Engineering, or embedded technical advisory roles.
• Familiarity with legal and compliance concepts, including contract lifecycle management, entity governance, and privilege-sensitive data.
• Understanding of multi-agent orchestration, including escalation, handoffs, and system auditability.
• Willingness to learn legal domain concepts despite not needing a law degree.
