About the role
Coefficient Giving is seeking a Communications Officer to manage media relations and shape public understanding of our work. This role involves direct engagement with journalists and ensuring accurate representation of our initiatives. You will act as a primary press contact, reporting to Sharon Yang, Senior Communications Officer.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Serve as an official spokesperson for Coefficient Giving, speaking with reporters on and off the record.
- Develop and pitch story ideas to journalists, securing media coverage across our diverse portfolio, including AI safety and global health.
- Build and maintain relationships with journalists and editors, updating media lists and tracking interactions.
- Handle incoming media inquiries, drafting statements and talking points, and coordinating timely responses.
- Prepare internal staff and grantees for interviews through briefing documents, Q&As, and media training.
- Monitor media coverage of Coefficient Giving and our grantees, identifying risks and opportunities.
- Provide media perspective on grant assessments and communications to evaluate potential public perception.
- Collaborate with the broader communications team on projects like newsletters and social media, upholding organizational standards.
Requirements
- Approximately 3-7 years of professional experience, ideally in media relations, a press office, public relations, or journalism.
- Demonstrated experience as a spokesperson, comfortable representing an organization directly to the media.
- Strong news judgment and understanding of newsroom operations and story pitching.
- Excellent judgment in sensitive, high-stakes situations, capable of assessing reputational risks under pressure.
- Ability to write clearly and quickly, adapting complex topics into concise, audience-appropriate communications.
- Proven ability to build productive relationships with journalists, researchers, and internal staff.
- Capacity to remain calm and effective while working under tight deadlines and in rapid-response environments.
- Genuine curiosity about Coefficient Giving's mission and focus areas, with a willingness to learn quickly.
