Senior Backend Engineer

About the role

ClickUp is seeking a backend engineer to join our AI Engineering team to build the infrastructure behind our AI-integrated workspace. You will focus on shipping user-facing features that connect tasks, documents, and chat with intelligent agents.

What you'll do

• Design and deploy backend services and APIs that support AI-driven user features.
• Manage the full lifecycle of product features from initial technical design to production monitoring.
• Develop backend logic for agent-based workflows, including context retrieval, conversation management, and action execution.
• Collaborate with designers and product managers to define and estimate feature scope.
• Maintain system reliability through performance tuning, observability, and incident response.
• Balance rapid iteration with long-term system maintainability and architecture quality.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional experience in backend engineering, specifically shipping features at scale.
• Strong technical foundation in API design, data modeling, and service architecture.
• Demonstrated experience working with production AI/ML systems, such as inference pipelines or model integrations.
• Ability to translate complex product requirements into clean, functional code.
• A product-focused mindset with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
• Demonstrated AI fluency and a deep interest in building agentic product experiences.

Nice to have

• Experience developing backend features for agent-based or AI-powered applications.
• Proficiency with LLM integration techniques like RAG, function calling, prompt routing, and tool use.
• Knowledge of asynchronous or event-driven architectures.
• Coding experience in Python, TypeScript/Node.js, or Go.
• Background in SaaS, productivity software, or developer platforms.
• Familiarity with vector databases, inference optimization, and orchestration frameworks.
• Prior experience in a high-growth startup environment.
