Software Engineer, Lending at Chime.
About the role
The Lending organization develops the infrastructure and products that provide members with credit and liquidity, including SpotMe, MyPay, and Instant Loans. You will build backend systems that manage money movement, underwriting, and reconciliation while working across the intersection of member-facing features and platform architecture.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Own and deliver product features from initial design through to production.
- Develop, test, and scale backend implementations for new and existing consumer products.
- Create resilient APIs to support the mobile application in partnership with the mobile team.
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners in Product, Design, Risk, Data Science, and Operations to solve member challenges.
- Improve system reliability and scalability through proactive identification of technical debt and performance bottlenecks.
- Maintain high technical standards across the engineering organization.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience building and operating production software at scale.
- Proficiency with Ruby on Rails or comparable frameworks for API development.
- Strong understanding of relational databases, caching strategies, and safe schema migrations.
- Knowledge of distributed systems fundamentals, including async processing, idempotency, retries, and backfills.
- Experience with high-scale architectural patterns.
- Ability to write maintainable, well-tested code and improve existing systems.
- Strong cross-functional communication skills with a focus on clarifying requirements and weighing trade-offs.
Nice to have
- Experience in fintech or risk-related engineering.
- Familiarity with data-driven systems and third-party data integration.
- Previous work experience in a start-up environment.

Practical notes
- Base salary range: $133,000 to $184,000, plus bonus, equity, and benefits.
- In-office policy: Four days per week in the office, with Fridays as a work-from-home day.
