Senior Staff Software Engineer

About the role

Checkr seeks a Senior Staff Software Engineer to shape the long-term architecture of its core systems and drive major cross-organizational efforts. You will lead the international expansion of the platform and help build out an Enterprise Architecture. This position requires working across the entire R&D organization to understand domain models, customer needs, and ensure an API-first product that scales.

What you'll do

• Identify the highest-impact opportunities for the engineering organization
• Own direction and drive execution of company-wide technical initiatives
• Contribute hands-on code in areas with significant business risk
• Decompose complex projects into maintainable systems that less experienced engineers can build
• Author documentation that establishes architectural standards for the broader engineering team
• Mentor and elevate Staff Engineers to raise quality and scalability across the company
• Guide build versus buy decisions that support overall business strategy
• Represent engineering in leadership discussions by deeply understanding customer, partner, and product team needs

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science or a related field
• 15+ years of software engineering experience
• 5+ years in a leadership role
• 2+ years leading architecture projects across an organization
• Proficiency in Ruby, GoLang, and Python
• Strong knowledge of cloud technologies and backend stack layers
• Deep familiarity with microservices design and asynchronous queueing patterns
• Experience designing and operating real-time and batch data pipelines handling billions of data points
• Track record mentoring engineering and product teams in domain-driven design
• Ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams
• Strong collaboration, communication, and project management abilities
• High sense of ownership and drive to learn and improve
