Checkr is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to shape the technical direction of screening and verification products. This role involves leading architectural design across multiple engineering teams, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, scalable solutions. You will contribute to products that enable informed risk assessments for a wide range of industries.

What you'll do

• Drive product development from initial concept through design, implementation, and final release.
• Work closely with design, product, and data teams to launch new experiments and features.
• Lead technical initiatives to support growth and manage technical debt across the organization.
• Mentor engineers and promote development best practices through knowledge sharing and documentation.
• Participate in quarterly and annual planning with product and engineering management.
• Ensure the quality, reliability, and scalability of services.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• At least 10 years of experience in software development.
• A minimum of 3 years in a project leadership capacity.
• Strong background in backend development (e.g., Ruby, Node.js, or similar).
• Working knowledge of frontend technologies like JavaScript and React for API support.
• Experience building scalable systems with automated testing, observability, and high performance.
• Demonstrated ownership of features from design to production.
• Proven ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Strong communication, project management, and a commitment to mentoring.

Practical notes

• San Francisco, CA base salary range: $224,000 - $264,000 USD.
• Denver, CO base salary range: $190,000 - $223,000 USD.

• This role requires working from a Checkr office 3+ days a week in Denver or San Francisco. A relocation stipend may be available.
