About the role
Checkr is seeking a Director of Tax to establish and lead our internal tax function from the ground up. You will serve as the primary architect for our global tax strategy and prepare the organization for public company requirements.

What you'll do
- Design and implement a global tax strategy covering federal, state, local, and international jurisdictions.
- Manage the quarterly and annual income tax provision process, including all necessary disclosures.
- Oversee income tax compliance, transfer pricing, R&D credits, and tax attribute planning.
- Direct indirect tax compliance and strategy, specifically regarding sales and use tax.
- Act as the tax lead for Corporate Development on M&A due diligence, deal structuring, and integration.
- Advise Legal, Accounting, FP&S, and Treasury departments on intercompany matters, ETR forecasting, and cash tax planning.
- Build out the tax team and vendor network while establishing SOX-compliant processes.
Requirements
- 12+ years of progressive tax experience, including time at Big 4 firms and in-house roles.
- Mastery of U.S. federal and state income tax, ASC 740, and indirect tax compliance.
- Proven ability to manage end-to-end tax provisions and coordinate with external auditors.
- Experience leading tax workstreams for M&A transactions.
- CPA, JD, or Master's in Taxation.
- Ability to work from the San Francisco hub 3+ days per week.
