About the role

In the capacity of a Structural Civil Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in the design, analysis, and technical supervision of civil engineering structures throughout various stages of projects, from initial feasibility assessments to construction support. Your contributions will be essential for the development, upkeep, and rehabilitation of CERN's infrastructure, ensuring that all structures meet safety standards and regulatory compliance. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external partners to achieve these goals.

What you'll do

• Conduct feasibility studies, preliminary designs, and detailed design analyses for various civil engineering structures, including surface buildings, underground facilities, roads, and utility networks.
• Perform structural analysis and dimensioning, ensuring compliance with seismic design standards and developing structural concepts tailored to project-specific constraints.
• Review and validate design drawings and models created by both internal drafters and external consultants, ensuring technical consistency and participating in the BIM management process.
• Evaluate existing structures to determine necessary reinforcements or modifications and contribute to infrastructure maintenance programs through structural diagnostics and condition assessments.
• Prepare technical specifications and assist in the tendering process in collaboration with the Procurement team, managing framework contracts for structural engineering services.
• Provide technical support during construction phases, including site inspections and validation of completed works.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure that all engineering solutions integrate functional and technical requirements effectively.
• Engage in cost estimation and control, maintaining a solid understanding of design documentation and coordination processes within a Revit® and AutoCAD® environment.

Requirements

• A Master's Degree or equivalent experience in civil engineering or a related discipline.
• Proven experience in civil engineering design and structural calculations, particularly with reinforced and prestressed concrete, structural steel, and specialized civil works such as diaphragm walls and retaining walls.
• Familiarity with road and infrastructure design, structural assessment, cost estimation, and preliminary studies.
• Knowledge of underground structures and works, including technical galleries, tunnels, and caverns, is advantageous.
• Initial experience in hydraulic calculations and network design would be beneficial.
• Proficient in using office software packages and tools relevant to structural design and analysis.

Nice to have

• Experience in managing multidisciplinary projects and coordinating with various technical disciplines.
• Familiarity with advanced structural analysis software and tools.
• Previous involvement in large-scale construction projects, particularly in a research or scientific environment.

• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with proficiency in English or French and a commitment to learning the other language.
• Ability to work collaboratively within teams, fostering constructive relationships and achieving results efficiently.
• Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and project requirements.

Practical notes

• This position requires working in radiation areas and performing interventions in underground installations.
• A valid driving license is necessary for this role.
• The contract is for a limited duration of three years, with the possibility of extension up to eight years and eligibility for an indefinite position thereafter.
• The role entails a standard working week of 40 hours.
