Hardware Support Engineer

About the role

CERN is seeking a Hardware Support Engineer to join the Fabric and Communication Systems (FCS) group. This role involves managing and operating the IT infrastructure that supports CERN's research community. The position is critical for ensuring the reliable performance of systems used in various experiments and computing facilities. You will be directly involved in commissioning new systems, particularly those related to the Next Generation Triggers project.

What you'll do

• Ensure the efficient operation of hardware infrastructure, focusing on both stability and performance.
• Participate in the commissioning process for new systems, especially those that are part of the computing cluster.
• Conduct hardware evaluations, including benchmarking activities, to provide informed support to the user community.
• Oversee the deployment and management of systems that accelerator cards, including enterprise-grade GPUs.
• Maintain existing server hardware, performing regular upgrades and maintenance to optimize performance.
• Collaborate regularly with industry partners to gain exposure to new technologies and innovative solutions.
• Organize and facilitate workshops centered on specific technical topics for knowledge sharing.
• Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance to users, ensuring their needs are met effectively.

Requirements

• A solid background in computer systems, including knowledge of BIOS/UEFI, x86/ARM processor architectures, virtualization, memory management, and GPU computing.
• Familiarity with various interconnect technologies, such as Ethernet and Infiniband.
• Experience with storage drive types, including S-ATA, SAS, and NVMe.
• Proficiency in management and monitoring protocols, including but not limited to IPMI, Redfish, SMART, and SNMP.
• Strong experience in Linux environments, with the ability to write shell scripts.
• Demonstrated programming skills in Python.

Nice to have

• Experience with performance profiling and optimization techniques for applications.
• Skills in performance-oriented debugging methodologies.
• Familiarity with software configuration management tools, such as Puppet or Ansible.
• Proficiency in the French language would be advantageous.
• Commitment to improving language skills in French while working in an English-speaking environment.

Practical notes

• Applicants should have a maximum of two years of professional experience post-graduation in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• Candidates must hold either a Bachelor's or Master's degree; those with a PhD or without a university degree are not eligible.
• Previous fellows or graduate contract holders at CERN are not eligible to apply.
• A valid driving license is required for this position.
• The position is set to begin on January 1, 2027, with a contract duration of 24 months, extendable to a maximum of 36 months.
• Working hours are structured around a 40-hour workweek.
