DevOps Engineer for Data Management

About the role

CERN is seeking a dedicated DevOps Engineer to become part of the IT Storage and Data Management group (IT-SD). This group is responsible for managing the essential services utilized by both LHC and non-LHC experiments for data storage and management. These services facilitate data archival, reconstruction, analysis, and distribution to computing facilities globally, particularly through the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid. The role will focus on scientific data management technologies, specifically Rucio and FTS, which are crucial for managing over one exabyte of data across numerous data centers worldwide.

What you'll do

• Develop integrations that connect large datasets to European AI factories and supercomputers, enhancing accessibility and usability for advanced computational tasks.
• Design and validate a storage federation system that allows different data management platforms to interact, ensuring transparent data access and policy-driven replication.
• Contribute to the open-source community by designing new functionalities and submitting code, features, and fixes back to the upstream Rucio project.
• Participate actively in the Operations team to maintain infrastructure for EU projects related to the Rucio service, including troubleshooting incidents and providing user support.
• Collaborate with researchers to understand their data management needs and translate them into technical solutions.
• Monitor and optimize system performance, ensuring reliable and efficient data handling across platforms.
• Document processes and systems to maintain clarity and facilitate knowledge sharing within the team.
• Engage in problem-solving discussions and contribute to the continuous improvement of processes and tools used in data management.

Requirements

• Proven experience in software development and integration, particularly with Python and scripting languages.
• Proficiency in Linux system administration, configuration, and automation in both bare-metal and containerized environments (e.g., Kubernetes).
• Familiarity with development tools such as Git and modern DevOps practices.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a focus on user needs.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English or French, with a willingness to learn the basics of the other language.
• A maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Computing Engineering or a related field.

Nice to have

• Experience with large-scale data management and storage systems, including cloud environments.
• Knowledge of authentication mechanisms and secure data transfer protocols.
• Familiarity with AI and machine learning workflows.
• Previous involvement in open-source projects or communities.
• Understanding of data governance and compliance issues in scientific research.

Skills & tools

• Strong programming skills in Python, with a focus on API design and development.
• Experience in managing Linux systems and Kubernetes clusters.
• Knowledge of large-scale data management practices and technologies.
• Familiarity with tools and frameworks for continuous integration and deployment.

Practical notes

• The position requires participation in stand-by duty as needed by the organization.
• Work may be required during nights, Sundays, and official holidays based on organizational needs.
• The contract duration is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months.
• The target start date for this position is November 1, 2026.
• Applicants must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
• Candidates with a PhD or without a university degree are not eligible to apply.
