Computing Engineer - Data Storage System

About the role

CERN is seeking an enthusiastic Computing Engineer to become a vital member of the IT Storage and Data Management group (IT-SD). This team is responsible for facilitating extensive data access for various laboratory projects, including the Large Hadron Collider, and managing an impressive storage capacity exceeding one exabyte at the CERN Data Centre. The successful candidate will work within the CERNBox team, which is dedicated to providing cloud storage solutions to the CERN community and enhancing interoperability across European research infrastructures and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Federation.

Key facts

What you'll do

• Develop and integrate backend software components that enhance the functionality of CERNBox.
• Package and deploy services that are interoperable in distributed environments, ensuring seamless access to data.
• Join the operations team to provide support to the CERN community, addressing incidents and assisting users with their needs.
• Contribute to the CERNBox open-source projects by writing code, adding new features, and fixing issues, collaborating with a wider open-source community.
• Collaborate with partner institutions and research infrastructures across Europe to test, validate, and refine the tools developed.
• Assist users and partner teams in adopting these tools, providing troubleshooting support and guidance as needed.
• Engage in hands-on problem-solving and service management, ensuring the smooth operation of cloud-native systems.
• Participate in the implementation of the Open Cloud Mesh (OCM) protocol, which is an emerging IETF standard for interoperable cloud storage and data sharing across institutions.

Requirements

• A background in backend development and cloud-native deployment, or a strong interest in these areas.
• Experience or enthusiasm for troubleshooting, hands-on problem-solving, and user support.
• Ability to work collaboratively with external partners and international teams effectively.
• A keen interest in system integration and the challenges of interoperability.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English or French, with a willingness to learn the basics of the other language.
• A maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Computer Engineering or a related field, with a Bachelor's or Master's degree as the highest educational qualification.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with frontend development to complement backend skills.
• Experience with Kubernetes and Helm chart development for cloud deployment.
• Knowledge of Linux technology stack, administration, and automation practices.

Skills & tools

• Proficient in backend software development, particularly using Go programming language.
• Experience with Kubernetes and Helm for managing cloud-native applications.
• Strong understanding of Linux systems and automation tools.

Practical notes

• The position requires a commitment to a 40-hour work week, with potential for stand-by duty as needed by the organization.
• Flexibility to work during nights, weekends, and official holidays may be required based on organizational needs.
• The initial contract duration is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months.
• The target start date for this role is November 1, 2026.
