Senior Product Designer

About the role

Careem is seeking a Senior Product Designer to lead the evolution of its design system. This role focuses on integrating AI to enhance the system for designers, engineers, and AI agents. You will be instrumental in maintaining design coherence across Careem's super app products.

What you'll do

• Manage the entire lifecycle of design system elements, including tokens, components, and patterns, from creation to retirement.
• Establish and enforce design standards for color, typography, spacing, and interaction across various platforms (iOS, Android, web) and languages, including right-to-left Arabic.
• Clarify ownership and responsibilities by maintaining a clear token architecture.
• Create and update comprehensive documentation to ensure consistent guidance across components.
• Champion accessibility standards (WCAG) within the system and manage related backlog items with product and engineering teams.
• Structure design tokens and components to enable AI agents to produce on-system designs from code or prompts.
• Build and maintain Code Connect mappings, MCP integrations, and structured component metadata.
• Implement AI-powered audits and linting to detect off-system usage and token errors before deployment.
• Use AI to verify and version documentation alongside its corresponding components.
• Develop Figma plugins and agent workflows to automate repetitive tasks for the design team.
• Communicate the design system's benefits in terms of efficiency and quality to various stakeholders, from individual contributors to executives.
• Organize design system guilds and critiques, synthesizing feedback from different product verticals into prioritized improvements.
• Enhance the organization's AI proficiency through workshops and training materials.
• Collaborate closely with engineering to translate design patterns into deployable components, ensuring technical feasibility.
• Exercise judgment to prevent component bloat, for example, by maintaining separate architectures when merging variants would create excessive complexity.
• Work with stakeholders to align design system goals with overall product strategy.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in product design.
• At least 3 years of dedicated experience with design systems at scale, preferably in multi-brand or super-app environments.
• Advanced understanding of variables, token architecture, component APIs, library management, and branching.
• Proven experience building real workflows using large language models (LLMs) and agentic tools, such as Figma Plugin API, MCP-based integrations, or prompt design.
• Ability to prototype using JavaScript/TypeScript, JSON, and manage design token pipelines.
• Capability to differentiate semantic intent from value coincidence and manage complexity through unification.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Nice to have

• Experience with right-to-left (RTL) or Arabic-first products, or familiarity with the Middle East market.
• Experience with production design-to-code pipelines, such as Code Connect or token transformation.
• Active involvement in the AI and design community through open-source contributions, speaking engagements, or writing.
