Job description
Senior Software Engineer at Carbon, Inc.
About the role
Carbon operates at the crossroads of hardware, software, and materials science to deliver production-grade 3D printing for commercial customers. You will join a small, collaborative engineering group building the web applications and backend systems that power a global network of printers. The work spans front-end interfaces, cloud infrastructure, and API design, all aimed at keeping the platform fast and reliable as it grows.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design and deliver customer-facing web applications that connect with core platform services including Fleet Management, Auth, and internal APIs
- Build REST and gRPC interfaces that expose platform capabilities to other teams, with attention to clean contracts and versioning
- Own front-end and cloud integration work using Google Cloud Platform and scalable database systems to bridge web and edge devices
- Develop complex, data-intensive React interfaces that function as control systems, not simple dashboards
- Lead features from initial design through production release, making architectural choices and selecting appropriate technologies
- Step into unfamiliar parts of the stack when problems arise, learning quickly rather than waiting for a specialist
- Work with product managers to turn customer needs into software designs and support junior engineers through code review and pairing
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent hands-on experience
- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Strong React and modern front-end abilities, including component architecture, state management, and performance tuning
- Track record building and shipping web applications that integrate with backend services via REST or gRPC APIs, authentication, and real-time data
- Experience designing production APIs that external applications or clients consume
- History of scaling web applications in production, whether for performance, data volume, or user growth
- Working knowledge of at least one backend language such as Go, Python, Java, C++, or TypeScript/Node, with ability to read and contribute backend code
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (GCP preferred, AWS or Azure acceptable) and modern database architectures
- Solid communication, debugging, and problem-solving abilities
- Willingness to work outside your primary stack when needed
Skills & tools
- React, component architecture, state management, performance optimization
- REST and gRPC API design
- Google Cloud Platform (or AWS/Azure)
