Staff Infrastructure Software Engineer at Carbon, Inc.
About the role
Carbon, Inc. is seeking a Staff Infrastructure Engineer to manage the cloud foundations that power our 3D printing technology. You will join a high-trust platform team responsible for the AWS and GCP environments, global printer connectivity, and CI/CD pipelines that support our production systems.

What you'll do
- Manage and scale multi-cloud infrastructure across AWS and GCP to ensure security and cost-efficiency.
- Design and maintain network architecture connecting our cloud services to a global fleet of 3D printers.
- Oversee Kubernetes clusters and Istio service mesh, focusing on traffic management, observability, and workload isolation.
- Lead infrastructure as code initiatives using Terraform, including module design and rollout.
- Optimize CI/CD pipelines in Jenkins and GitHub Actions to improve build speeds and deployment safety.
- Participate in on-call rotations, drive incident response, and implement permanent fixes for recurring issues.
- Provide technical mentorship to cross-functional teams and establish engineering standards for cloud operations.
Requirements
- Seven or more years of experience in production cloud infrastructure with expertise in AWS or GCP and proficiency in the other.
- Deep understanding of networking, including VPCs, DNS, load balancing, TLS, and VPNs.
- Expert-level Terraform skills, including managing state at scale and executing complex migrations.
- Proven experience maintaining CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and GitHub Actions.
- Strong Kubernetes background, including cluster management and multi-tenant strategies.
- Practical experience with service meshes, specifically Istio, including mTLS and envoy-based traffic control.
- Fluency in Linux, containerization, and at least one scripting language such as Python, Go, or Bash.
- Bachelor degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
Nice to have
- Background in connecting cloud services to physical edge hardware.
- Familiarity with Bazel or polyglot monorepo build systems.
- Experience with security and compliance frameworks like SOC 2 or ISO 27001.
- History of working within a platform engineering team serving internal customers.
