About the role
This role focuses on building the telemetry SDK that tracks user interactions and performance across the entire Canva product. You will lead the technical direction for measuring both traditional web interfaces and new AI-driven experiences, ensuring Canva engineers have visibility into product reliability.

What you'll do
- Architect and develop a telemetry SDK designed for high adoption and ease of use across all product teams.
- Optimize performance by working directly with browser internals, including the rendering pipeline, network layer, and performance APIs.
- Establish new measurement standards for AI-driven features where traditional interaction tracking is insufficient.
- Maintain a hands-on coding approach, contributing directly to the codebase while setting architectural standards.
- Drive organizational adoption of the telemetry platform through influence and technical leadership.
- Collaborate with a cross-functional team of backend, data science, and analytics engineers to refine data collection strategies.
Requirements
- Proven experience building or evolving large-scale frontend telemetry, observability, or instrumentation systems in production.
- Deep technical knowledge of browser internals, including rendering, network layers, and performance APIs.
- Strong proficiency in React and TypeScript.
- Experience with state management at scale, specifically using MobX or similar tools.
- Demonstrated ability to design SDKs or libraries that prioritize developer experience and simple integration.
- Familiarity with data warehouse workflows and how telemetry data is processed downstream.
- Strong computer science fundamentals, including data structures and complexity analysis.
- Experience operating at a Staff level, managing ambiguous technical problems, and influencing cross-team outcomes.
Nice to have
- Production experience with React Native or the mobile bridge.
- Previous work with observability platforms like Datadog, Honeycomb, or Sentry.
- Background in measuring AI-driven user experiences.
Skills & tools
- React, TypeScript, MobX, Browser Performance APIs, Frontend Observability (Tracing/Metrics/RUM), SDK Design, Data Warehouse concepts.
