Key facts

What you'll do

• Develop and enhance the event-sourced workflow engine and its associated APIs (REST/gRPC/MCP), ensuring backward compatibility and stability for existing integrations and AI agent connections.
• Tackle complex, undefined technical challenges from conception through to delivery, including problem definition, solution design, trade-off analysis, and execution planning.
• Implement significant engine features, such as instance suspension/resumption and AI agent-driven process steering, while improving engine simplicity and maintaining high quality.
• Improve system resilience, manage schema evolution for event logs, and build robust observability features for production diagnostics.
• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in data access patterns across various data stores, including RocksDB, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, and relational databases.
• Mentor team members, lead technical discussions, and contribute to incident resolution and root cause analysis, feeding learnings back into the platform.

Requirements

• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in backend engineering, with substantial expertise in distributed and event-driven systems.
• Profound understanding of event sourcing principles, including consistency, ordering, replay mechanisms, and failure modes in distributed environments.
• Proven ability in designing and evolving APIs, focusing on contract-first approaches, backward compatibility, and versioning strategies.
• Experience in diagnosing and optimizing system performance under production load, including profiling and backpressure management.
• Demonstrated capability to lead technical initiatives from ambiguous starting points, make pragmatic decisions, and foster growth in other engineers.
• Strong technical writing and remote collaboration skills, coupled with a deep understanding of product requirements.

Nice to have

• Prior experience with workflow automation or business process management (BPMN).
• Familiarity with consensus and replication protocols like Raft or SWIM.
• Advanced skills in optimizing query patterns for RocksDB, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, and relational databases.
• Solid knowledge of the JVM, including its memory model and concurrency features.
