About the role
Camunda seeks a Senior Director to lead and advance its global accounting operations as the company expands towards €500M in Annual Recurring Revenue. This position requires a leader with deep accounting knowledge and a proactive approach to building and enhancing financial processes. The ideal candidate will embrace challenges with a problem-solving attitude and a drive for execution.

What you'll do
- Oversee the entire accounting framework, including month-end close, financial reporting, internal controls, and accounting policies.
- Ensure compliance with IFRS standards and facilitate successful external audits.
- Develop a scalable operational structure encompassing personnel, processes, systems, and international operations, including global payroll and treasury functions.
- Provide expert guidance on complex accounting matters such as revenue recognition, commission structures, equity, payroll, intercompany transactions, foreign exchange, and policy interpretation.
- Collaborate with Sales and Revenue Operations to inform accounting treatments for deal structures, pricing, and international entity strategies.
- Design and implement accounting solutions that support business growth while managing risk.
- Recruit, mentor, and retain skilled accounting professionals within a globally distributed team.
- Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and professional development.
- Champion and implement automation initiatives within accounting workflows, working alongside Camunda's Enterprise Agentic Automation Team.
- Utilize AI-driven tools to reduce manual tasks, improve data accuracy, and enhance the capacity of the accounting function.
- Progress the internal control environment towards SOX readiness in preparation for potential future capital events.
- Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, payroll providers, and other key partners.
- Support significant corporate activities like fundraising, mergers, acquisitions, or initial public offering readiness.
Requirements
- Significant experience leading an accounting or controller function within a complex, multi-entity, and globally distributed organization, preferably in a high-growth, recurring-revenue software company.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams effectively while maintaining a strong grasp of technical accounting details.
- A proven history of building high-performing teams with deep expertise.
- Strong technical accounting acumen, with extensive experience in revenue transactions, commissions, equity, payroll, and intercompany structures.
- Experience with fundraising, mergers and acquisitions, and managing external audits.
- Familiarity with global payroll and multi-jurisdictional operations.
- Enthusiasm for automation and AI as tools to transform accounting operations.
- Experience with modern systems to streamline workflows, minimize manual effort, and generate better insights.
- A proactive mindset with a willingness to tackle ambiguity and drive action.
- Ability to act as a strategic partner to Sales and the broader business, balancing risk and growth.
- Experience with operational transformation and managing change within an organization.
- Availability to begin your workday at 7am ET to facilitate collaboration across global time zones.
- Proficiency in asynchronous and Slack-first communication.
- 6+ years of people management experience in an accounting or controller role.
- Experience in the enterprise SaaS or software industry.
- Prior experience in remote-first or highly distributed organizations.
Nice to have
- CPA, ACA, ACCA, or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
- IFRS experience.
- NetSuite experience.
- Big 4 background, IPO experience, or M&A exposure.

Practical notes
- This role reports to the CFO.
- The team scope includes Accounting Operations, Revenue Accounting, Group Reporting, Tax & Treasury, and Global Payroll, comprising 15 FTEs.
- Compensation includes base salary and variable targets, with equity offered through a Virtual Stock Option Plan (VSOP).
