Staff Software Engineer, Banking

About the role

You will guide the technical trajectory of the Banking organization, which manages the Brex Business Account, Bill Pay, and vendor payment features. This role involves balancing long-term architectural planning with hands-on development across our financial infrastructure and customer-facing products.

What you'll do

• Define technical strategy for major Banking initiatives while managing delivery timelines across multiple teams.
• Design and evolve scalable systems for money movement, payment orchestration, and bank account management.
• Collaborate with product, design, operations, risk, and compliance teams to translate regulatory and business needs into technical solutions.
• Improve system reliability, observability, and incident prevention through better engineering standards.
• Lead architecture reviews and facilitate alignment among stakeholders to navigate complex tradeoffs.
• Mentor senior engineers and develop technical leadership within the organization.
• Participate in hands-on coding, debugging, and implementation for high-priority projects.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, specifically in senior technical leadership roles for multi-team projects.
• Proven history of leading architecture and delivery for large-scale distributed systems.
• Ability to decompose complex technical and organizational challenges into clear execution plans.
• Experience enhancing reliability and operational standards for production systems.
• Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with product, design, and operations partners.
• Excellent communication skills to influence senior stakeholders without direct authority.
• Technical depth to handle implementation details and provide sound engineering judgment.
• Experience mentoring senior-level engineers.

• Background in fintech, banking, payments, ledgering, or money movement.
• Experience working within highly regulated environments.
• Experience managing large-scale migrations, platform consolidations, or service modernizations.
