Staff Software Engineer, Travel & Expense

About the role

Brex is seeking a technical leader to guide the architecture and strategy of our Travel and Expense platform. This role focuses on solving complex, cross-functional challenges that span our expense, travel, policy, and spend control systems. You will function as a high-level individual contributor, driving technical excellence and mentorship across multiple engineering teams.

What you'll do

• Locate and resolve critical technical gaps that exist between our various Travel and Expense teams.
• Establish and maintain high standards for architecture, design reviews, and system implementation.
• Collaborate with engineering managers and existing staff engineers to align on group strategy and remove execution blockers.
• Mentor senior engineers and foster the growth of future technical leaders.
• Integrate AI-driven approaches into our development, review, and operational workflows.
• Participate in leadership discussions to help define investment priorities for the group.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including a history of leading technical initiatives across multiple teams.
• Proven ability to navigate ambiguity and solve complex problems that lack a clear owner or defined charter.
• Extensive background in the design and maintenance of large-scale backend production systems.
• Strong communication skills and a history of elevating the performance of peer engineers and managers.

Practical notes

• Salary range: $240,000 to $285,000 per year, plus equity and additional compensation depending on experience and market factors.
