Senior Data Engineer, Risk

About the role

This position involves designing and maintaining data architecture, modeling, and tooling for various products. You will build the data infrastructure that allows compliance and risk teams to make informed business decisions. Your work will support efforts to detect and report suspicious financial activity and protect customers across Block's platforms.

Key facts

What you'll do

• Lead the creation and improvement of data models using AI code generation for event, customer, and process data.
• Define and standardize business and product metrics within optimized datasets, creating data dictionaries and related documentation.
• Develop monitoring systems for data quality and lineage, and build AI agents to reduce false positives and automate issue resolution.
• Participate in on-call rotations, monitor daily operations, diagnose and log issues, and fix critical data pipelines to meet internal service level agreements, automating these tasks with AI agents.
• Collaborate with non-technical stakeholders and product teams to understand requirements, translate them into data needs, and develop automated end-to-end solutions.

Requirements

• At least 10 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 8 years with a Master's degree, or equivalent professional experience.
• High proficiency in SQL, Python, and Dbt.
• Experience designing and managing the full lifecycle of medium-to-large data engineering projects, including scoping, design, development, testing, deployment, and documentation.
• Experience with ETL scheduling tools that support dependency checking.
• Experience with schema design and dimensional data modeling.
• Experience implementing data quality and data lineage monitoring.
• Experience making data-driven decisions through AI and agentic automation.

Practical notes

The salary range for this role varies by location zone: Zone A: $198,000 - $297,000 USD; Zone B: $188,100 - $282,100 USD; Zone C: $178,200 - $267,400 USD; Zone D: $168,300 - $252,500 USD.
