Software Engineer, iOS/Mobile
Job description
About the role
Beacon AI is building an AI platform that makes flying safer, more efficient, and more capable, backed by top investors and partnerships with major airlines. As an iOS engineer on our mobile team, you will own the design and implementation of high-impact iOS applications, primarily targeting iPad, that power critical flight safety operations. You will work closely with senior engineers and designers to deliver user-facing features while contributing directly to production systems that aviators rely on every day. Your responsibilities will include developing Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) applications that must perform flawlessly in demanding operational environments. You will be performance obsessed, ensuring your applications handle millions of data points for wind and weather efficiently without sacrificing precision. You will also ensure that EFB applications remain fully operational in offline and degraded connectivity environments where failure is not an option. Every line of code you write will directly support real-time, safety-critical aviation applications where reliability and accuracy are non negotiable.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design and implement iOS features using Swift, SwiftUI, UIKit, and modern iOS frameworks with a focus on robustness and clarity.
- Build and maintain high performance mobile applications that ingest, process, and visualize large datasets such as wind and weather data in real time.
- Develop and integrate Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) features including location services, map navigation, and aviation instrument displays that pilots depend on.
- Integrate with external hardware and edge devices to enable real time data ingestion and seamless application functionality on the edge.
- Architect offline-first experiences and graceful degradation strategies to guarantee full application functionality with low or no connectivity.
- Implement background processing and long-running compute tasks using Swift Concurrency, async/await, and background task APIs to support continuous data handling without impacting the user experience.
- Apply data security best practices including Keychain storage, encryption, and secure data handling to protect sensitive flight and user data at rest and in transit.
- Collaborate with senior engineers and designers to deliver precise, reliable, and intuitive mobile experiences that meet the strict demands of aviation operations.
- Participate in code reviews and uphold established iOS best practices and architectural patterns to keep the codebase healthy and scalable.
- Help ensure code quality, performance, and maintainability through rigorous testing, debugging, and clear documentation for future maintainers.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience developing iOS applications, or equivalent experience through internships, projects, or coursework that demonstrates real-world delivery.
- Experience with Swift and SwiftUI, with some exposure to UIKit and common iOS frameworks that are prevalent in aviation mobile applications.
- Familiarity with building or working on Electronic Flight Bag applications, location services, or map navigation frameworks such as Mapbox or MapKit in operational settings.
- Experience integrating with external hardware or edge devices and managing real time data pipelines that feed critical aviation workflows.
- Demonstrated ability to optimize application performance and handle large datasets without degradation in speed, reliability, or frame rendering precision.
- Experience building offline-first or connectivity-resilient mobile applications, including local data caching, sync strategies, and handling intermittent network conditions.
- Familiarity with background processing patterns and long-running task management using Swift Concurrency or background task frameworks to keep data flowing.
- Understanding of iOS data security practices including Keychain, encrypted storage, secure coding principles, and compliance expectations in regulated environments.
- Familiarity with asynchronous programming concepts such as async/await, multithreading, or GCD to build responsive and stable user interfaces.
- Strong problem solving skills and eagerness to learn from feedback, mentorship, and collaborative code reviews with senior team members.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast moving environment where priorities shift and operational needs change rapidly.
- Willingness to write tests, document behavior, and contribute to architectural decisions that impact safety critical mobile systems over the long term.
- Comfort with command line tools, version control workflows, and build pipelines that support frequent, reliable releases to production environments.
- Commitment to following aviation software practices where correctness, traceability, and clarity are essential for safety and certification considerations.
Nice to have
- Experience building or optimizing applications specifically for iPad, including split view, multitasking, or large screen layout design that improves pilot workflows.
- Passion for aviation and a desire to improve air travel efficiency and safety through software that directly supports flight crews.
- Experience working on safety critical or mission critical systems where failure modes are carefully analyzed and mitigated.
- Familiarity with CI/CD workflows or cloud backed mobile systems that automate testing, distribution, and observability for field teams.
- Interest in real time data, sensors, or hardware adjacent systems that connect aircraft platforms with software driven insights.
