Software Engineer, iOS/Mobile

About the role

Beacon AI is looking for an iOS Software Engineer to join our mobile team. You will play a key role in developing impactful iOS applications for iPad that enhance our flight safety platform. This position involves close collaboration with senior engineers and designers to create user-friendly features and contribute to production systems.

What you'll do

• Create and implement iOS features using Swift, SwiftUI, UIKit, and contemporary iOS frameworks.
• Develop and sustain high-performance mobile applications capable of processing extensive datasets, including real-time wind and weather data.
• Design and integrate Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) functionalities, such as location services, map navigation, and aviation instrument displays.
• Connect with external hardware and edge devices to facilitate real-time data processing and application capabilities.
• Architect solutions that ensure full application functionality in offline or low-connectivity scenarios, employing graceful degradation strategies.
• Utilize Swift Concurrency, async/await, and background task APIs for background processing and long-running computational tasks to maintain a smooth user experience.
• Implement data security best practices, including Keychain storage and encryption, to safeguard sensitive flight and user information.
• Collaborate with senior engineers and designers to create precise, reliable, and user-friendly mobile experiences.
• Engage in code reviews and adhere to established iOS best practices and architectural standards.
• Contribute to maintaining code quality, performance, and documentation through testing.

Requirements

• Minimum of 3 years of experience in iOS application development, or equivalent experience through internships, projects, or academic work.
• Proficiency in Swift and SwiftUI, along with some familiarity with UIKit and common iOS frameworks.
• Experience with EFB applications, location services, or map navigation frameworks such as Mapbox or MapKit.
• Proven experience in integrating with external hardware or edge devices and managing real-time data streams.
• Ability to optimize application performance and efficiently handle large datasets without compromising speed or reliability.
• Experience in developing offline-first or connectivity-resilient mobile applications, including local data caching and synchronization strategies.
• Familiarity with background processing techniques and managing long-running tasks using Swift Concurrency or background task frameworks.
• Knowledge of iOS data security practices, including Keychain, encrypted storage, and secure coding standards.
• Understanding of asynchronous programming concepts such as async/await, multithreading, or GCD.
• Strong problem-solving abilities and a willingness to learn from feedback and mentorship.
• Capability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Nice to have

• Experience in developing or optimizing applications specifically for iPad, including features like split view, multitasking, or large screen layout design.
• Interest in aviation and a commitment to enhancing air travel efficiency and safety.
• Background in safety-critical or mission-critical systems.
• Familiarity with CI/CD workflows or cloud-based mobile systems.
• Interest in real-time data, sensors, or hardware-adjacent systems.

Practical notes

This position is based in San Carlos, CA, and requires onsite work for more than three days a week, with the option for remote work on other days.
