About the role
Base Labs is a research initiative focused on advancing open-source large language models. We offer a three-month program for researchers to work on frontier AI problems while utilizing our internal training and inference infrastructure.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Conduct original research that contributes to the open-source community and our internal technical roadmap.
- Work under the direct guidance of a senior researcher through a 1:1 mentorship model.
- Present findings at major academic and industry conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, and Grace Hopper.
- Collaborate on-site in our San Francisco office to help define our research culture and agenda.
- Transition into a full-time role if performance meets our standards.
Requirements
- Current enrollment in or recent completion of a PhD in statistics, AI, ML, or a related discipline.
- A history of research or a portfolio that shows rigorous, independent thought.
- Ability to work autonomously without a pre-set roadmap.
- A strong interest in the impact and practical application of your research.
- Availability to work in-person in San Francisco for the full duration of the fellowship.

Practical notes
