Base Labs Fellowship

About the role

Base Labs is a research initiative focused on advancing open-source large language models. We offer a three-month program for researchers to work on frontier AI problems while utilizing our internal training and inference infrastructure.

Key facts

What you'll do

• Conduct original research that contributes to the open-source community and our internal technical roadmap.
• Work under the direct guidance of a senior researcher through a 1:1 mentorship model.
• Present findings at major academic and industry conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, and Grace Hopper.
• Collaborate on-site in our San Francisco office to help define our research culture and agenda.
• Transition into a full-time role if performance meets our standards.

Requirements

• Current enrollment in or recent completion of a PhD in statistics, AI, ML, or a related discipline.
• A history of research or a portfolio that shows rigorous, independent thought.
• Ability to work autonomously without a pre-set roadmap.
• A strong interest in the impact and practical application of your research.
• Availability to work in-person in San Francisco for the full duration of the fellowship.

Practical notes

• Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis for cohorts beginning in September 2026 and later.
• We provide full support for compute resources, housing, meals, and travel expenses.
