Senior Platform Engineer at Bain & Company.
About the role
The Private Equity Group (PEG) Innovation team develops proprietary software and data products to support investment decision-making. As a Senior Platform Engineer, you will design and maintain the shared infrastructure services that power our internal product squads. You will own the full lifecycle of these services, ensuring they are observable, secure, and performant within our Azure environment.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Develop and operate core platform services including Auth, RBAC, Session Management, Audit, Notifications, File handling, and Search.
- Manage service APIs, versioning, and backwards compatibility across product squads.
- Maintain PostgreSQL schemas using Alembic migrations with expand/contract patterns.
- Implement authentication protocols such as JWT, refresh token rotation, SAML/OIDC, and service-to-service auth.
- Operate Redis-backed patterns for caching, rate limiting, and distributed locking.
- Build event-driven systems using Kafka and CloudEvents.
- Instrument services with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus metrics, and structured logging.
- Maintain Helm charts and Kubernetes manifests for service deployment.
- Participate in on-call rotations and maintain operational runbooks.
- Mentor junior engineers and establish engineering standards for code reviews and production practices.
- Utilize AI coding assistants for scaffolding and documentation, while validating all outputs against security and production requirements.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
- 6+ years of experience building and operating production backend services and APIs.
- Proven ability to manage services end-to-end, including design, deployment, and on-call responsibilities.
- Experience with REST and event-driven microservices in Kubernetes.
- Proficiency in PostgreSQL schema design, migration, and performance tuning.
- Experience implementing authentication and authorization systems in production.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor team members and enforce technical standards.
Skills & tools
- Python: FastAPI, Pydantic v2, SQLAlchemy 2.0 async, Alembic, pytest, Ruff, mypy.
- Infrastructure: Microsoft Azure, Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), Helm, Docker.
- Data & Messaging: PostgreSQL, Redis, Apache Kafka.
- Observability: OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, structlog.
- Security: HashiCorp Vault, Azure Key Vault, mTLS.
- AI Tools: Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or equivalent LLM-based coding assistants.

- Compensation includes a discretionary annual performance bonus and a 401(k) plan with a 4.5% company contribution, which is 100% vested upon start and increases after 3 years.
