Reporter, Defense (Business & Capital)
Job description
About the role
Page Title
We are searching for a reporter to serve as our subject matter expert on the businesses and money transforming the defense industry. This role exists because defense is no longer only the domain of traditional government contractors. Venture capital is directing billions toward defense startups, artificial intelligence and autonomy are reshaping procurement priorities, and a new generation of companies is challenging established industry giants.
You will be responsible for following the money. This means breaking news and explaining the deals, investments, and business strategies in a marketplace that is changing quickly. You will help readers understand how Pentagon priorities, procurement shifts, and industrial policy influence investments and corporate strategy. In this position, you will make an impact through specific responsibilities.
Your work will appear in a bi-weekly newsletter that explores the biggest trends and news shaping the business of defense. You will break news on venture capital, startups, mergers and acquisitions, public companies, defense procurement, and the financial forces reshaping the industry. You will help Axios readers connect policy decisions to investment movements. You will become our public authority on stage and elsewhere to help illuminate these important issues.
This position values an entrepreneurial spirit and passion for Axios' mission. A commitment to building and nurturing a diverse and inclusive environment is required. A belief in Smart Brevity as the core writing style of Axios is essential. You must bring reporting experience from a fast-paced news environment. Demonstrated experience landing big scoops and conceptualizing big ideas is necessary. Strong writing skills for online and newsletter formats are required. You must be able to command a stage and perform in live interviews. Experience working across teams to produce quality content is expected. Excellent verbal and written communications skills are mandatory.
Starting salary for this role is in the range of $100,000 - $150,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation benefits. Axios compensation philosophy takes into account cost of labor differentials across the country. Because this is a remote-optional job posting, this salary range takes into account all possible locations within the United States, but candidates will only be eligible for the salary range for their location.
Axios is committed to embracing artificial intelligence as a core part of how we work. All team members are expected to actively develop AI literacy and use AI tools to enhance their productivity, creativity, and efficiency. We invest in ongoing learning to ensure every employee is equipped to responsibly and effectively integrate AI into their daily workflows.

Primary caregiver leave offers 12 weeks of paid time. A generous vacation policy, plus holidays, is provided. One mental health day per quarter is included. An annual learning and development stipend is available. You will receive a $100 monthly work-from-home stipend. Tele-mental health services are offered through Headspace. OneMedical membership includes telehealth services. Personal health advocacy resources are available through HealthAdvocate. Inclusive fertility, hormonal health, and family-forming benefits are provided through Carrot Fertility. Access to the Axios "Family Fund" allows employees to request financial support when facing financial hardship or emergencies. Increased work flexibility for parents and caretakers is provided. Virtual company-sponsored social events help build community. A strong and positive work environment is maintained.
