Tech Lead / Engineering Manager

About the role

Aurelian creates AI software to assist 911 dispatch centers in managing high call volumes and improving emergency response. We are seeking a hands-on leader to guide a small engineering pod while maintaining a significant individual contribution role. This position is designed for an experienced engineer ready to transition into full-time management while remaining active in the codebase.

Key facts

What you'll do

• Manage a pod of 3-4 engineers, setting technical strategy and overseeing code quality.
• Write and review code regularly, including troubleshooting production systems.
• Mentor team members through pair programming and professional development coaching.
• Participate in the recruitment process to expand the engineering team.
• Visit dispatch centers to observe users and translate their needs into product features.
• Transition gradually from a player-coach role into a dedicated Engineering Manager position.

Requirements

• 3+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Proven history of leading projects or mentoring peers, even without a formal management title.
• Ability to contribute to the codebase immediately and design scalable architectures.
• Strong sense of ownership and the ability to drive projects to completion independently.
• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
• Genuine interest in user research and direct customer interaction.
