Software Engineer, IT Software Engineers

About the role

Ascensus is looking for a software engineer to join our team in Austin. You will build and maintain applications that support our savings plan technology platform, which serves nearly 16 million people.

What you'll do

• Develop, test, document, and maintain software applications with minimal supervision.
• Participate in estimation and planning phases across the software development lifecycle.
• Collaborate with quality, operations, and support engineers to manage deployments and system uptime.
• Engage in design discussions with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Adhere to company security protocols regarding the handling of confidential data.
• Support organizational process improvements and contribute to team-wide initiatives.

Requirements

• 3+ years of professional experience building software systems in small to medium business environments.
• 3+ years of hands-on experience with C# or Java.
• Proficiency with the Microsoft technology stack.
• Strong grasp of object-oriented design, data structures, and algorithms.
• Understanding of design principles including S.O.L.I.D., cohesion, and coupling.
• Experience with Service Oriented Architecture and the development of RESTful services.
• Ability to write clean, maintainable code using unit testing, automation, and refactoring.

Nice to have

• Experience with Python, C, C++, MySQL, Apache, Nginx, Redis, JavaScript, jQuery, or Knockout.js.
• Background in open source development.
• Familiarity with legacy code maintenance.
• Experience with Agile practices such as test-driven development, pair programming, and CI/CD.
• Understanding of web technologies including HTTP and HTTP proxies.
