You will architect and implement Android applications that serve as the primary interface for in-vehicle intelligence, directly shaping how drivers and passengers interact with the physical AI stack. In this role, you own the end-to-end delivery of high-impact features that bridge the vehicle operating system and the user-facing software, ensuring reliability in safety-critical environments. You will partner with hardware teams, data scientists, and product managers to translate complex requirements into intuitive, production-ready mobile experiences. Your work will influence the software-defined future of transportation across automotive, defense, and commercial fleets. You are expected to write clean, maintainable code that stands the test of rigorous safety and performance standards. What you'll do
- Design and build robust Android applications that integrate deeply with Applied Vehicle OS and deliver consistent, high-performance user experiences in connected cars.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and backend engineers to translate ambiguous requirements into well-defined, testable features.
- Optimize application responsiveness, memory usage, and battery efficiency to meet the strict constraints of in-vehicle environments.
- Implement and maintain reusable components and libraries that accelerate feature development across multiple vehicle models and manufacturers.
- Lead code reviews and pair programming sessions to uphold engineering standards, share knowledge, and mentor junior developers.
- Diagnose and resolve complex production issues using logging, metrics, and real-user monitoring to minimize downtime and improve reliability.
- Work closely with the autonomy team to ensure that Android applications correctly consume and display sensor-driven insights in real time.
- Participate in sprint planning, roadmap prioritization, and architectural discussions to align engineering efforts with business objectives.
- Write and maintain comprehensive instrumentation and automated tests to ensure feature quality and reduce regression risk.
- Stay current with Android framework updates, Jetpack libraries, and industry best practices to drive continuous innovation.
- Partner with operations and field teams to coordinate over-the-air updates and ensure smooth rollout of new vehicle software.
- Contribute to open source initiatives within the company where applicable, improving internal tools and shared libraries.
- Document technical decisions, APIs, and integration points to enable efficient handoffs and long-term maintainability.
- Act as an ambassador for Applied. by demonstrating the company's mission and technology to stakeholders and customers.
- Continuously explore emerging technologies in mobile computing and evaluate their applicability to next-generation vehicle experiences.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or an equivalent field.
- Possess 1+ years of professional Android application development experience with a track record of shipped products.
- Demonstrate strong proficiency in Kotlin and Java, along with a solid understanding of Android SDK and core APIs.
- Have hands-on experience with Jetpack libraries, modern architecture patterns such as MVVM and MVI, and dependency injection.
- Show familiarity with Android build systems, Gradle, and version control workflows using Git.
- Exhibit a product-focused mindset, balancing technical excellence with user experience and business impact.
- Thrive in a fast-paced, startup-like environment where priorities can shift quickly and ownership is essential.
- Consistently write clean, maintainable, and testable code, following established coding standards and best practices.
- Display strong problem-solving skills and the ability to debug complex issues in distributed systems involving vehicle software.
- Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, articulating trade-offs and progress clearly.
Nice to have
- Experience contributing to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and/or working with Android Automotive OS (AAOS).
