This position involves hands-on electrical design and hardware development, ensuring compliance with performance, safety, and regulatory standards. You will contribute to critical documentation for DOE and NRC licensing processes.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design electrical systems for reactor instrumentation, control, and power distribution from initial concepts to detailed implementation.
- Create schematics, wiring diagrams, and define interfaces for sensors, control hardware, and various electrical subsystems.
- Review and provide feedback on existing schematics, wiring diagrams, harnesses, and control panel designs.
- Participate in design reviews to confirm the technical soundness and traceability of electrical and I&C sections.
- Assist with hazard analyses, identifying potential electrical or instrumentation failure modes and developing mitigation strategies.
- Support testing activities, including bench testing, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL/HITL) simulations, and integration campaigns.
- Collaborate with systems, mechanical, software, and licensing teams across different functions.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience in designing, analyzing, or integrating electrical systems.
- Strong understanding of electrical fundamentals, including DC and AC circuits, impedance, and transient behavior.
- Ability to create, interpret, and review electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Familiarity with electrical design, simulation, or PCB layout tools, such as SPICE-based simulators, schematic capture, or layout review tools.
- Hands-on experience with lab instrumentation like oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and signal generators.
- Capability to analyze failure modes and determine safe states in electrical or control systems.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, ambiguous hardware development environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Nice to have
- Experience in regulated or safety-critical environments such as nuclear, aerospace, defense, maritime, or industrial sectors.
- Knowledge of fail-safe design principles, redundancy, voting logic, or diversity in control systems.
- Hands-on experience with hardware bring-up, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis.
- Exposure to HIL/HITL testing, automated test frameworks, or data acquisition platforms.
- Familiarity with relevant codes, standards, or guidance, including IEEE, IEC, or DOE nuclear standards.
- Familiarity with GDE-987 processes or similar hardware qualification paths.
- Experience contributing to formal design reviews, hazard analyses, or configuration-controlled documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to take ownership of hardware problems, navigate ambiguity, and resolve issues effectively.
