About the role
American Express is looking for a Senior Frontend Software Engineer to join the Global Commercial Services team. This position focuses on creating a modern expense management platform that enhances the digital experience for small and medium-sized businesses as well as corporate clients. You will play a vital role in developing user-friendly, scalable web applications.

What you'll do
- Oversee the design, development, and implementation of web applications utilizing React and TypeScript.
- Work closely with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to define product specifications and enhance user experiences.
- Construct scalable and accessible frontend architectures and component libraries.
- Create data-driven user interfaces, dashboards, and dynamic forms using JSON-schema or similar technologies.
- Collaborate with backend developers to integrate APIs for comprehensive functionality.
- Guide junior engineers and foster a collaborative culture within the team and engineering guilds.
- Incorporate analytics and observability features into frontend applications.
- Enhance performance, scalability, and reliability across various browsers and devices.
- Engage in architecture discussions, RFCs, and proof-of-concept projects.
- Maintain coding standards, testing protocols, and design guidelines.
- Plan, estimate, and manage deliverables while identifying risks and resolving issues.
- Communicate progress and showcase milestones to stakeholders, integrating feedback for continuous improvement.
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of software engineering experience with a concentration on frontend development.
- Proven experience working closely with product management and UX design teams.
- Strong design sensibility with an emphasis on creating pixel-perfect user interfaces.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and mentoring capabilities.
- Advanced proficiency in React and TypeScript.
- Extensive hands-on experience with modern web applications, including:
- Web: Next.js (App Router, RSC), React 19.
- Mobile: React Native (Expo), React 19.
- Monorepo: Turborepo.
- Data & state management: TanStack Query (React Query) for server state, Zustand for client state, and tRPC for type-safe client-server interactions.
- UI & design systems: Tailwind CSS, class-variance-authority, and an internal component library; Framer Motion and react-reanimated for animations.
- Observability & analytics: Datadog RUM and APM, Amplitude, FullStory.
- Testing: Vitest for unit and integration tests; familiarity with component, visual, and end-to-end testing methods.
- CI/CD: GitHub Actions.
