Software Engineer - Database Engineering

About the role

Snowflake is hiring engineers to advance our large-scale, elastic data processing systems. You will join our Database Engineering team to build high-performance infrastructure that supports global enterprise operations. We are looking for technical problem solvers who want to develop complex distributed systems and improve query processing capabilities.

What you'll do

• Architect and maintain a fault-tolerant, parallel cloud database capable of handling petabyte-scale data.
• Write reliable code to support the requirements of large-scale enterprise clients.
• Identify and resolve performance or scalability limitations within the system.
• Instrument components to diagnose issues and deploy effective fixes.
• Create new service architectures to support the Snowflake Data Cloud.
• Build algorithms for distributed data processing and query optimization.
• Create diagnostic tools to help users monitor and understand their data workloads.

Requirements

• 2+ years of professional experience in commercial or open-source software development.
• Proficiency in C++ or Java.
• Experience working within Linux environments.
• Strong grasp of computer science fundamentals, specifically algorithms, data structures, and distributed systems.
• Systems programming expertise, including concurrency and multi-threading.
• Proven ability to document, debug, and test software implementations.
• Bachelor degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

Nice to have

• Experience with database internals, including SQL, query execution, and query optimization.
• Background in compiler design.
• Knowledge of distributed key-value stores like FoundationDB or storage engines such as RocksDB, InnoDB, or BerkeleyDB.
• Familiarity with the internal workings of PostgreSQL or MySQL.
• Experience with large-scale data processing or warehousing, including Spark or Hadoop.
• Understanding of consistency models, transactions, and distributed systems.
• Experience with database replication or big data storage technologies like Cassandra, HDFS, or columnar databases.
• Master degree or PhD.
