Computational Biologist

About the role

Aligned Labs is hiring 20 senior computational biologists to consult on frontier AI research projects. You will evaluate the performance of advanced AI models by testing them against complex, real-world drug discovery problems and providing expert feedback on their reasoning.

What you'll do

• Stress-test leading AI models against research-level biological problems.
• Assess whether AI reasoning aligns with the standards of a trained scientist.
• Explain the selection, configuration, and interpretation of specialized computational tools and workflows.
• Identify specific instances where AI reasoning fails to match scientific reality.

Requirements

• MS or PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, genomics, systems biology, or a related field.
• Active involvement in drug discovery research or development within industry, academia, or government.
• Practical, hands-on experience using computational workflows to support scientific decision-making.
• Ability to clearly articulate complex scientific methodologies and conclusions.
• Fluent English reading and writing proficiency.

Nice to have

• Extensive publication record.
• Specialized expertise in small molecules, antibodies, biologics, oligonucleotides, RNA therapeutics, or cell and gene therapy.

Skills & tools

• Functional genomics: CRISPR screen analysis, hit calling, gene essentiality, and dependency mapping.
• Single-cell and spatial: scRNA-seq, ATAC-seq, spatial transcriptomics, clustering, and trajectory analysis.
• Multi-omics: Integration of transcriptomics, proteomics, epigenomics, and metabolomics.
• Human genetics: GWAS, Mendelian randomization, colocalization, and target-disease evidence.
• Network and pathway biology: Enrichment, network inference, and mechanism-of-action modeling.
• Sequence and structure: Alignment, phylogenetics, protein language models, and structure prediction.
• Technical proficiency: Scripting, pipeline development, statistical modeling, and handling large biological datasets.

Practical notes

• Compensation ranges from $70 to $100 USD per hour, with higher rates available for candidates with specialized expertise or significant publication records.
