About the role

Aisobservers is seeking a dedicated Underwater Acoustician to join our innovative team in Beaufort, North Carolina. This full-time position involves applying advanced acoustic principles to study underwater environments, contributing to marine research and conservation efforts. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in acoustics, signal processing, and marine biology, and will play a crucial role in enhancing our understanding of underwater soundscapes and their impact on marine life.

What you'll do

Conduct comprehensive acoustic surveys to gather data on underwater sound levels and their effects on marine ecosystems.
Analyze acoustic data using specialized software to identify patterns and trends in marine animal behavior and habitat use.
Collaborate with marine biologists and ecologists to integrate acoustic findings into broader research projects aimed at understanding marine biodiversity.
Develop and implement acoustic monitoring programs to assess the impact of human activities, such as shipping and construction, on marine life.
Prepare detailed reports and presentations to communicate research findings to stakeholders, including government agencies, conservation organizations, and the scientific community.
Stay updated on the latest advancements in underwater acoustics and related technologies to enhance research methodologies.
Participate in fieldwork, including deploying and retrieving acoustic monitoring equipment in various marine environments.
Mentor and train junior staff and interns in acoustic data collection and analysis techniques.
Contribute to grant proposals and funding applications to support ongoing and future research initiatives.
Engage with the public and educational institutions to raise awareness about the importance of underwater acoustics in marine conservation.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop innovative solutions for mitigating noise pollution in marine environments.
Assist in the maintenance and calibration of acoustic equipment to ensure accurate data collection.

Requirements

A Master's degree or higher in Acoustics, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
At least 3 years of experience in underwater acoustics or a similar research environment.
Proficiency in acoustic data analysis software, such as MATLAB, R, or Python.
Strong understanding of marine ecosystems and the impact of anthropogenic noise on marine life.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences.
Experience in fieldwork and the deployment of underwater acoustic monitoring equipment.
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to interpret complex data sets.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team-oriented environment.
Willingness to travel for fieldwork and attend conferences as needed.

Nice to have

Familiarity with GIS software and spatial analysis techniques.
Experience with machine learning applications in acoustic data analysis.
Knowledge of marine policy and regulations related to underwater noise.
Previous involvement in public outreach or educational programs related to marine conservation.
Certification in small boat operation or diving experience.

Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools.
Familiarity with acoustic monitoring equipment, including hydrophones and data loggers.
