Senior Developer, Open Source at 1Password
About the role
This role focuses on enhancing 1Password's open source contributions and making our developer tools easily accessible within developer workflows. You will lead technical direction and drive the completion of significant projects, from concept to ongoing support.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Develop major new features, substantial product enhancements, and essential bug fixes for our Agent Hooks and IDE plugins.
- Establish architectural guidelines for our integrations and public repositories, ensuring scalability, security, and alignment with 1Password's existing models.
- Contribute to the team's strategic planning by identifying technical opportunities and potential risks up to six months in advance, then lead their implementation.
- Improve code quality and testing standards, proactively identify issues, and maintain high-quality documentation for community-facing projects.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Partnerships, Product, UX, and the SDK/CLI teams to translate requirements into actionable development tasks.
- Lead efforts to improve customer support on your platform and resolve developer challenges.
- Foster a positive team environment by promoting best practices, offering constructive feedback, and encouraging shared responsibility.
Requirements
- Extensive professional software development experience, with a proven ability to independently manage and deliver medium to large-scale technical projects from start to finish.
- Deep proficiency with modern development toolchains including Git, IDEs, the terminal, debugging, and testing utilities, as well as relevant programming languages. You should be comfortable reading, writing, and reviewing code.
- Experience designing systems that are extensible and maintainable, particularly in areas like developer tooling, IDE extensions, agent integrations, or actively maintained open source projects.
- Demonstrated capability to define technical direction and make architectural decisions that support product scalability, security, and quality.
- A history of effective engagement with external contributors in public forums and maintaining high standards in community-facing code repositories.
- Interest in agent-assisted development and creating tools to simplify and secure this process.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, enabling clear articulation of project impact and progress to engineering, product, and design stakeholders.
- A security-conscious mindset aligned with 1Password's core principles.
Nice to have
- Experience managing a popular open source project or leading community engagement for open source initiatives.
- Familiarity with AI-powered or agentic IDEs (e.g., Cursor) and the emerging agent-hook ecosystem.
- Experience contributing to an Open Source Program Office (OSPO) or a similar function.

- Annual base salary ranges provided for US and Canada.
